Jennie’s story

Jennie, 31, from Jarrow who now lives in Sunderland, quit smoking with local support after finding out she was pregnant with her first child. Having never considered quitting before, she is now feeling healthier, happier, and more confident as she prepares to welcome her baby daughter.

Jennie said: “I started smoking when I was around 15. Everyone around me was doing it, so it just felt normal. At first, a pack of 20 cigarettes would last me around three days, but before I knew it, I smoked around 10 a day.

“I’d never tried to quit before. My dad, auntie and grandad all smoke, so it was just part of everyday life. It wasn’t until I found out I was pregnant and spoke to my midwife about the benefits of quitting, that I decided to give it a try.”

Now 29 weeks pregnant, Jennie successfully quit smoking with support from hospital stop smoking staff and the use of nicotine replacement therapy patches.

Speaking about the support she received, Jennie said: “It was so helpful to have someone to talk to. My advisor, Nicole, was so lovely, and I never felt judged. She celebrated every milestone with me and helped me see each step as a real achievement. Having that support throughout made such a difference.

“I already feel so much better. For years I’d had a slight cough, but that’s completely gone now. I’ve always been quite active, but I didn’t realise how much smoking was affecting my breathing until I stopped.

“I’m an auntie to nine kids and I love spending time with them. I’ve always enjoyed playing with them, but now I can keep up for much longer without needing to stop for a breather or step outside for a cigarette.

“And I’ve saved so much money since quitting. It’s really helped me prepare for the arrival of my daughter. I can’t wait to meet her, and it feels great knowing that I’m doing everything I can to give her the healthiest possible start in life.”
